Arapahoe Basin
Arapahoe Basin is about skiing and snowboarding at a level true to the sport. The skiable terrain here tops out at over 13,000 feet, which puts the upper reaches of the mountain above timberline. That means wide open bowls, powder and an overall experience unique to this classic area.
Pallivincini is included on any list of the most challenging ski runs, and the East Wall is an open expanse for pointing them down slope and letting them run. A-Basin does offer runs for every level of skier, but this mountain is really most enjoyed by the solid intermediate to advanced or expert skier and boarder. There is an excellent ski school here so if you are looking to take it to the next level you'll find the right mix of terrain and instruction.
The Basin does have restaurants, ski shops and rental, but not a vast base area village like you will find at some resorts. So if strolling trendy shops on a two-hour lunch beak is what you want this isn't your mountain. But if you want to put an edge against the snow, drop some steep chutes and do a little casual cornice launching, then by all means - welcome home.
Last season they added a new summit lodge, the Snow Plume Refuge, with food and beverage options, restrooms, and a deck with spectacular views.
Arapahoe collects almost 400 inches of snow each winter, so, even when the calendar says summer A-Basin might still be open. One of the two latest operating ski areas in the country lifts often run until mid-June. They don't call it The Legend for nothing.
Local fact - Pallivincini, or the Pali is a great ski run. So great in fact there is a beer named after it. Ladies and gentlemen, need we say more?
